No One is SAFE: Disneyland Instagram Hacked

Social media is an integral part of the world we live in today. It is utilized in nearly every aspect of life, and has recently become an invaluable tool for marketing and branding for businesses of all sizes. Any major organization, from professional sports teams to Google to McDonalds uses social media accounts  - mainly Instagram and TikTok - as their main driver for advertising. Social media has transformed the way businesses approach their marketing strategies, and while the benefits for using social media on a mass scale are clear, the disadvantages are becoming more apparent everyday.

Disneyland’s Hacked Instagram Page

Last week, Disneyland Anaheim’s Instagram account was hacked, resulting in a slew of inappropriate, racist and homophobic posts available to be viewed by the account’s 8.4 million followers. The account was taken over by a self-proclaimed “super-hacker” who claims to have been exacting revenge upon Disneyland due to multiple negative experiences with Disneyland staff. While Disney was able to regain control of the account relatively quickly, the millions of followers - a significant amount of whom are families with young children - were subject to the harmful and damaging content posted by this supposed “super-hacker”. This very real crime only scratches the surface of the kind of cyber-attacks that harm thousands of accounts, both big and small, every single day. Of course, this one made international headlines because it happened to one of the most well-known brands around the world.

So, where do we go from here? Disneyland will most assuredly add more protections to their social media accounts, most likely seeking assistance from a major cybersecurity company, and hopefully, they will be hack-free from here on out. What about the other hundreds of thousands of company accounts that have yet to be the victim of a cyber-attack and don’t want to seek out the help of a major cyber security company? It’s an important question; one every business owner should be asking. 99% of social media accounts are lost due to human risky behavior or often illogical bans from the platforms themselves, and there’s rarely ever a roadmap to recover the accounts. Additionally, 25% of businesses will suffer from cyber–attacks against their social media, and this number is only growing. When businesses lose access to their accounts, they are also losing money, and their private data is vulnerable to exposure. In 2022, losing a social media account can mean losing a career or a company.
